Stolen Backhoe Is Recovered
One incident justifies the expense for installing GPS systems in the fleet

"Any time we make an investment that we can't tie to an actual project, we are very careful to evaluate how we can see a return. Initially, we thought our return was going to be from the insurance carrier, because they agreed to keep our rates the same after we installed a GPS tracking system. But recently, we realized an even better return after a piece of equipment was stolen.

"We were storing equipment in a yard near one of our projects in Chicago. We left the equipment there over the weekend, and on Monday morning, we were missing a backhoe. With the GPS system, we located the machine in Harvey, IL. We called the Harvey police, and they found several other pieces of equipment with the backhoe. Everything was returned to the owners.

"This one incident justified the expense of installing the GPS system in our equipment. Another benefit was the fruit basket we received from one of the contractors whose machine was returned from Harvey. His backhoe didn't have a GPS tracking device on it, and he was very grateful that ours did."
